On Sunday, former president Olusegun Obasanjo backed Peter Obi, the front-runner for the Labour Party, saying he had an advantage over the other contenders in terms of education, discipline, vigor, and character.

“We who are still living should praise God for His mercies and prepare ourselves for the remaining few months of this administration and pray and work very hard for an immediate better future a future of liberation, restoration and great hope and expectation.’’
Obasanjo criticized the appropriateness of the candidates for president and accused them of lying, saying that some of them had trumpeted unrealistic promises in an effort to win the election.
The former president lamented the bad state of the country and emphasized that the presidential contenders were unaware that Nigeria had fallen much below where it had been when he took office in 1999.
He acknowledged that Nigeria was in dire straits and teetering on the brink of dissolution and breakup when he assumed office, but he added that the country was not then confronted with the level of pervasive and mind-numbing insecurity, rudderless leadership, mismanagement of diversity, pervasive corruption, and poor economic policies that are present today.
“Campaigners have been traveling across the nation and feeding us information on what they mean and what they don’t mean, what they understand and what they don’t fully understand, what is possible and what is not possible, what is realistic and what is unrealistic, and what is true and what is false. I think we don’t need to be misinformed or credulous. He urged the electorate to exercise caution so as not to fall for the same tricks again.
A suitable presidential candidate, according to the wise man, must have “a track record of ability and performance; a vision that is authentic, honest, and realistic; character and attributes of a lady and a gentleman who are children of God and obedient to God.” He then went on to endorse the former governor of Anambra State.
Obasanjo declared his support for Obi and urged Nigerian youth to vote for him, implying that Obi has the qualities and attitudes required to properly manage Nigerian issues at this time.
