The National Association of Nigerian Students’ leadership has called for a national strike to demand the release of Aminu Mohammed, a student at the Federal University of Dutse in Jigawa State, who was detained and imprisoned for a tweet about Aisha Buhari, the wife of the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
Usman Barambu, the president of NANS, underlined in a statement acquired by newsmen on Thursday that the demonstration, which would start on Monday, will last indefinitely until Mohammed is freed.
According to Ayekooto, NANS had earlier apologized to the First Lady and demanded the student’s release. NANS claimed that after trying various options for consultation and consolidation without success, it was left with no choice but to confront.
“You are hereby informed of the decision of the leadership of NANS to proceed on a nationwide protest. This decision was made in response to the exhaustion of all options available to us before confrontation in seeking the freedom of one of us who was arrested in a questionable manner, tortured, molested, harassed, and detained by government agents.
“We have sought Mohammed’s freedom through consultation and consolidation, but these efforts have not produced the desired outcomes. As a result, the nationwide demonstration will start on Monday, December 5, 2022.
Please be advised that our demonstration will go on until he is released completely, according to the statement.
According to sources, Mohammed was apprehended by security personnel who brought him to Abuja in November after locating him in Jigawa.
Mohammed was subsequently remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State by Justice Halilu Yusuf of the Federal Capital Territory High Court for allegedly harming the First Lady’s reputation.
Social media users have responded to Adamu’s arrest by calling for his release. This includes prominent Nigerians.
Barambu noted that Usman Baba, the Inspector General of Police, and the First Lady would be the targets of NANS’ protest.
