Chelsea have completed the signing of French centre-back Wesley Fofana from Leicester City on a seven-year deal for a fee in the region of £70m.

France Under-21 international Fofana has made 37 Premier League appearance since joining Leicester from French side Saint-Etienne in 2020.

In the 2021–22 season, he was limited to just seven league appearances due to a preseason broken leg.

He declared, “The past two days have been incredibly big for me and I’m quite thrilled.”

“I trained with the team this morning, and it’s a dream come true for me. I’m incredibly eager to begin playing games for the supporters and the club.

I want to take home every trophy available, including the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup. I’m here to continue the winning tradition that the club has established since it was founded.

He is the third-most expensive Premier League defender, behind Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Manchester United’s Harry Maguire, who was also acquired from Leicester in 2019 for £80 million each.

After Manchester United completes the £81.3 million acquisition of Antony, Fofana will fall to thirteenth place in terms of Premier League acquisition cost.

Prior to Thursday’s deadline, the Fofana deal had increased Premier League teams’ all-time high summer transfer window spending to almost £1.7 billion. The $1.43 billion spent over the summer in 2017 set the previous record.

Wesley is an extremely promising defender who has already demonstrated his talent in the Premier League at a young age, according to Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly, who has spent about £250 million in his first transfer window since purchasing the club from Roman Abramovich.

“We are thrilled we were able to bring one of Europe’s most exciting talents to Chelsea and further improve that part of our squad, both for this season and many more to come,” the statement continued.

As Leicester defeated Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final to win the trophy for the first time ever, Fofana was a starter in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI.

Former Leicester striker Gary Lineker wrote on social media, “Gutted to lose him but wish Wesley Fofana well.”

“It makes sense because every player wants to play Champions League football.

“Chelsea supporters, you now possess the world’s most prodigiously brilliant young center defender. I do think he’s that good, yes.

Raheem Sterling of England joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £50 million this summer, along with Kalidou Koulibaly of Senegal from Napoli for £34 million, Carney Chukwuemeka of England from Aston Villa for £20 million, Marc Cucurella of Spain from Brighton for £60 million, and Cesare Casadei of Italy from Inter Milan.

After losing 2-1 to Southampton on Tuesday, their second defeat in the previous three games, Thomas Tuchel’s team is now seventh in the Premier League.
