Japan and Brazil will face off ahead of the Qatar World Cup in a friendly in Tokyo on June 6, the Japan Football Association announced on Wednesday.

“We are very pleased to be playing Brazil, the number one ranked team, at this time as we begin our preparations for the World Cup,” Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said in a statement.

“We want to create a team that can compete with the top teams in the FIFA rankings from their point of view, without looking up too much, while yet appreciating them. In this match, I want to demonstrate this approach.”

Brazil has five World Cup victories, the most recent in 2002.

They are the clear favorites to win the tournament this year, having gone undefeated in qualifying and setting a new record for most points in a single South American group.

The game at Tokyo’s National Stadium is one of four warm-up games scheduled for Japan’s Samurai Blue team.

On June 2, they will face Paraguay in Sapporo, and then play unnamed opponents in Kobe and Osaka on June 10 and 14, respectively.

On November 21, 2022, the World Cup will begin.
