Manchester United will be without six first-team players for Thursday’s visit of Chelsea, interim boss Ralf Rangnick has confirmed.

United were without Luke Shaw, Fred, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba for Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal, in which center-back Harry Maguire started on the bench in the wake of a bomb threat at his family home.

Rangnick has confirmed that Maguire will join the aforementioned quartet on the sidelines due to a minor knee injury. Maguire was expected to return to the starting lineup for the Chelsea game.

To make matters worse, Jadon Sancho is out with tonsillitis, while right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a huge doubt for the match due to an illness that Rangnick could not disclose.

The boss said, “Unfortunately, Fred is not yet available.” “He tried to train yesterday, but after training, I had a long conversation with him and he just told me that he doesn’t feel fully fit, that he’s not at 100 percent, and with a player like Fred who’s always committed to giving his very best, I don’t think it makes sense, with the muscular injury that he had, to play him too soon, because that would mean we risk re-injury, and that’s something I don’t want to do.” As a result, he will be unavailable tomorrow.

“Aside from that, we’ve got Harry Maguire, who isn’t available.” He has a niggle in his knee, but it’s not a major problem.

“Obviously, Paul, Fred, Edinson, Luke Shaw, and Jadon – Jadon is ill, he’s had tonsillitis since yesterday, hasn’t been able to train today, and won’t be available tomorrow.”

Rangnick said that with so many first-team players unavailable, it’s ‘possible’ that he’ll give some of United’s academy talents a chance to shine.

“We’ll have to wait and see if, for example, Aaron Wan-Bissaka can play tomorrow since we have quite a few players absent tomorrow and one or two still with question marks,” he stated.

“I played Hannibal at Liverpool, so it’s possible [I’ll play youngsters], but we have to be fair to those guys as well.”

“It needs to be the proper time; they should get an opportunity to play and perform well rather than being pushed into a game.” It should also be the proper time, in my opinion.”
