President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Governor Mai Bala Buni to take over the activities of the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) just days before the party’s planned convention.
Governor Buni’s role in the party has been questioned when Niger State Governor Abubakar Sanni Bello announced that he is serving as the party’s National Chairman while Governor Buni is out of the country.
According to reports, Governor Bello has taken over the party’s activities from Governor Buni, a scenario that has prompted President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene.
President Buhari warned governors elected on the APC platform to avoid acts and statements that could splinter the party.
The President met with Governor Buni in the United Kingdom and asked him to take over the activities of the party’s convention planning committee, according to a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.
The decision, according to Adesina, is part of the President’s intervention in the ruling party’s current ‘uncertainties.’
He also wrote to Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State, who is also the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, according to him.
The President lamented the plethora of cases within the APC, which he claimed may lead to the Independent National Electoral Commission rejecting the party’s activities and actions (INEC).
He said that the party could not alter the CECPC’s leadership without violating INEC’s deadline, and that the existing uncertainties and disputes “mount a genuine threat to the party.”
As a result, President Buhari considers that the following directions are necessary:
*.* The issue of the leadership of the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee (CECC) should immediately return to status quo ante;
*.* “All members of the Governors Forum and their followers should desist from any behaviour or utterance that will likely lead to disunity in the ranks of the party, and ultimately jeorpadise the transition to the convention;
*.* “The Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Committee should accordingly be allowed to proceed with all necessary preparations to hold the convention as planned- unfailingly on 26th March, 2022.”
Those copied in the letter by the President included Governor Buni and the acting Chairman of the CECPC, Governor Sani Bello of Niger State, as well as the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police.
