Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President, has formally informed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT) of his decision to run for President in the 2023 general elections.
He announced his plan during a meeting with PDP leaders in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, on Tuesday.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who served as Vice President during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s eight-year government from 1999 to 2007, has tried unsuccessfully to become Nigeria’s President on multiple occasions.
In his most recent bid for President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar ran on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 2019, but fell short of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, receiving 11 million votes to President Buhari’s 15 million votes.
Atiku, on the other hand, pleaded with PDP leaders for a second chance to run for President in the 2023 election.
If handed the chance to fly the party’s flag when Nigerians go to the polls next year, he promised to establish bridges across the country.
In his words: “Please join me in building bridges across this country so that every part of this country will have a sense of belonging,” he told the crowd of PDP leaders at the meeting.
“Leaders, elders, wise men of our great party, I call on you to please give me another opportunity to advance all these ideals of our party so that we can consolidate democracy, unity, and development of our country.”
The former vice president thanked the PDP leaders for honouring his invitation to attend the meeting.
At the end of the discussion, he took to social media to share photos of the meeting.
“Today’s meeting with the Board of Trustees of the PDP shows clearly that our party is organic and ready to lead Nigeria into a brighter future,” he said in a post on his verified twitter handle.
