Chelsea snatched a dramatic winner against Newcastle in the first game at Stamford Bridge since Blues’ Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government.

The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw before Kai Havertz expertly controlled a ball forward and fired into the net in the 88th minute.

Newcastle had hoped that Havertz would be sent off for catching Dan Burn in the face with an elbow while jumping in the first half, but the German was only given a ticket.

Both teams had struggled to create clear-cut chances before the goal, with Chelsea taking 75 minutes to register a shot on target.

With a well-struck 25-yard volley, Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron forced a fantastic save from home goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and Burn headed narrowly wide.

A small group of Chelsea fans screamed Abramovich’s name for a brief spell in the second half, just as they had done in Chelsea’s 3-1 away triumph over Norwich on Thursday.

As part of the government’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Abramovich has been sanctioned, which means his assets, including Chelsea Football Club, have been frozen.
