Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff, has instructed Nigerian army officers and soldiers to remain non-partisan in their duties during and after the 2023 general elections.

On Tuesday in Abuja, Yahaya delivered the keynote address at a two-day Career Planning and Management Seminar for Nigerian Army officers organised by the Department of Military Secretary.

The COAS, who was represented by Maj.-Gen. Charles Ofoche, the Chief of Transformation and Innovation, stated that military commanders must behave professionally and ethically.

The seminar, he said, was part of the Nigerian army’s efforts to guarantee that its men were professional in all of their activities and operations across the country.

“As we approach the 2023 general elections, I’d like to use this venue to emphasise the need of being nonpartisan.”

“Efforts are being made to guarantee that officers and men handle themselves professionally and ethically before, during, and after the election.”

“As a result, I urge you all to conduct themselves in the most professional manner possible during the electioneering process,” he stated.

The involvement of Nigerian army soldiers in many operations around the country, according to the COAS, has highlighted the necessity for effective career planning in order to develop good leadership among officers.

To ensure a balanced and enjoyable career path for officers, he believes it is critical to strengthen our approach to career planning and human resource management.

The seminar, he said, will give participants the opportunity to learn about the new carrier policy decisions, the Nigerian army’s analysis, and the role of officers in achieving the policy’s goals.

“As members of the armed forces, we must be aware of the importance of effectively preparing to function in a joint environment and deploying them to locations where they may develop creative plans, methods, and strategies to meet the changing nature of the battlespace.”

“As a result, maintaining momentum while inspiring our officers and men through an effective and balanced career planning process is critical,” he said.

Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdulsalam, the Army’s Military Secretary, said the seminar was held in recognition of the fact that human resource management plays a significant role in the professional development of people for optimal performance in combined and single-service operations.

The session, according to Abdulsalam, was aimed to help Nigerian army commanders comprehend the criteria needed to place themselves.

This, he claims, will allow them to match worldwide best practises and demand for efficiently carrying out the task of career planning for army commanders.

The Nigerian army’s involvement in a wide range of activities, he said, had exacerbated the need for understanding of career-related difficulties.

“The department has witnessed officers with a lack of grasp of career-related issues.

“This has been exacerbated by the Nigerian army’s recent involvement in a wide range of missions and a rise in the number of commissioned officers.”

“These elements have had a considerable impact on career planning and, as a result, military human resource management requires a deliberate strategy,” he stated.

The seminar’s theme, “Career Planning and Management, Prerequisite for a Professional Nigerian Army,” was explicitly couched in line with COAS’ vision, according to the military secretary.

According to him, the Chief of Army Staff prioritised officer training and retraining in accordance with his command philosophy, which emphasises professionalism, readiness, and administration.
