Gunmen raided over ten communities in Niger State on Saturday night, killing eight people and kidnapping a bride, while injuring several others.
The gunmen, estimated to number in the hundreds, stormed the towns in the state’s Lavun Local Government Area, sacking people.
A resident of Ndakogitu community who sought anonymity said the bandits also attacked a wedding ceremony where they abducted the bride and another girl.
“They came into our community and went to the venue of a wedding, they stole all the monies realized at the wedding ceremony, including other valuables were also snatched.
“The rampaging gunmen also said to have rustle a number of cattle belonging to the villagers.
The attack which lasted all through Saturday night to Sunday displaced over 5,000 persons.
According to a source who spoke with our journalist, the terrorists traveled to other areas and shot at people fleeing for their lives.
The terrorists were alleged to have fled with rustled cattle after the attacks, but were unable to leave with them as the single bridge connecting the community to Akare had fallen, giving them no choice but to abandon the cattle and flee.
The vigilante groups in the communities, on the other hand, organized and battled the robbers, who eventually killed six locals due to their lack of equipment.
People in the impacted villages have been forced to flee their houses, and those who had previously gone to the neighboring Batati market have not returned home for fear of being attacked by the gunmen.
When called, Emmanuel Umar, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Internal Security, confirmed the recent attacks but stated he had not yet received the incident’s details.
Egbako, Ndaruka, Ebbo, Ndagbegi, Tshogi, Gogata, and Ndakogitu, all in Lavun local government, were among the communities attacked.
