Brazilian second division side Bahia disclosed three of their players were injured when a bomb exploded on the team bus.

The club say the bomb went off as the bus arrived at their home stadium in Salvador for a regional cup match against Sampaio Correa.

Danilo Fernandes, the goalkeeper, was transported to the hospital with facial injuries, as did left-back Matheus Bahia and striker Marcelo Cirino.

Despite the incident, Bahia decided to play and won 2-0.

“According to Esporte Clube Bahia, a bomb exploded inside the team’s bus upon arrival at Fonte Nova, injuring athletes. The situation of goalkeeper Danilo Fernandes, who was injured in the face by shrapnel and was already brought to the hospital, is the most concerning “The club sent out a message.

Fernandes was “OK” but will spend the night in hospital after suffering “many injuries to his face, neck, and lower limbs,” according to a later tweet from the club.

After opting to play, Bahia coach Guto Ferreira lauded his players’ “dignity and professionalism.”

Following the event, several other Brazilian teams, including Internacional, tweeted in support of Bahia, writing: “We are together, and we express our disgust at this another brutal attack on Brazilian football.”

Botafogo explained: “This is intolerable. A criminal act that necessitates a thorough investigation. Botafogo stands with our Bahia comrades.”
