European football governing body, UEFA is set to hold an emergency meeting on Friday to “evaluate the situation” concerning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with the former set to host the Champions League final in Saint Petersburg in May.
“Following the development of the situation between Russia and Ukraine over the last 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee on Friday, February 25 at 10:00 CET (0900 GMT) to assess the situation and make all necessary decisions,” UEFA said in a statement.
The final of European club football’s most prestigious championship will be placed on May 28 at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, which hosted multiple matches during last year’s European Championship and the 2018 World Cup, both of which were staged in Russia.
Gazprom, the Russian state energy behemoth, has a substantial sponsorship deal with European football’s regulatory body.
Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, stated on Tuesday that if Russia invaded Ukraine, it would have “no chance” of hosting the European Football Championship.
“A Russia that is considered a pariah state has no chance of hosting a football tournament,” Johnson remarked.
Chelsea and Manchester City, who competed in last season’s final in Porto, Portugal, are among the four English Premier League clubs still in the Champions League’s last 16 this season.
Due to the pandemic, UEFA has already moved the previous two Champions League finals from Istanbul to Lisbon in 2020, and then back to Istanbul last year.
