Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says reports of a rift between captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo are “absolutely nonsense”.

A story in the Mirror stated the pair was “embroiled in a power struggle” over the club’s captaincy.

Rangnick claims he was told what was published and isn’t bothered by it since “I know it isn’t true.”

“This is complete nonsense – I’ve never discussed captaincy with players,” the German remarked.

“I’ve never had a problem with it.” “Harry is our captain and will remain so.”

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Maguire the captaincy two years ago, but the article claims that Ronaldo’s return has weakened his power.

The England defender denied the report on social media, saying that he and his teammates are “together and focused” on Sunday’s game against Leeds United.

“I’m not frustrated at all,” Rangnick added, “because I know it’s not true.” “I’m not a listener.”

“I was aware of what had been written. Yes, some players were dissatisfied at the end of the [transfer] window. This has improved, and the locker room climate is much better now than it was a few weeks ago.

“It’s about putting in a good performance and demonstrating teamwork on the field.” That’s what we have control over.”

Rangnick stated he was only recently made aware of the Manchester United-Leeds rivalry and that he is looking forward to playing in front of a sold-out Elland Road.

“In Germany, we had a lot of local derbies,” he remarked. “However, our team has a lot of experience playing against teams in this situation.

“As far as I’m aware, this is Manchester United’s first game at Elland Road in front of a packed house since they were last in the Premier League. It’s something we’re looking forward to.”
