It is sad to see that we contradict our beliefs as a people. Seeing disasters ravage a nation bound with freedom, peace, and unity is so disheartening. We wake up every day to chant our national anthem at events, functions, and official gatherings while taking serious lessons from it. A nation like ours is rich in culture and resources, yet we lack all the standards to justify our blessings. We face disasters every day in our nation, which are consuming everyone one after another.
A leap into what Unity in Diversity is in a notion like Nigeria that refers to people coming together despite their differences. Culture, language, ideology, religion, sect, class, ethnicity, and other factors can all contribute to these inequalities. Furthermore, this concept has existed since the beginning of time. Nigeria’s topography is diverse, with climates that range from dry to humid tropical. Nigeria’s people, on the other hand, are its most diversified aspect. Yoruba, Igbo, Fula, Hausa, Edo, Ibibio, Tiv, and English are among the hundreds of languages spoken in the country.
Nigeria’s culture is shaped by the country’s diverse ethnic groupings. There are about 521 languages spoken in the country, as well as around 1150 dialects and ethnic groupings. The rest of Nigeria’s ethnic groups (also known as’ minorities’) can be found throughout the country, but particularly in the central belt and north. Past administrations have used various measures to bring disparate people together through a shared sense of national identity, according to history. Apart from Nigeria’s national emblems, the government established the national youth service corps, which allows for inter-tribal marriages among ethnic groups, as well as the establishment of unification schools to help ethnic nationalities understand and acquire languages other than their home tongue. The lack of unity in Nigeria is the result of the political class’s desire to pave the way for their exploitative agenda, not for the sake of the country’s unity.
Nigerians must remain unified and focused on socio-economic development for the country to catch up with other developed countries around the world. Several unrests have recently occurred in the country, endangering the country’s sovereignty with issues ranging from kidnapping to armed banditry. Surmounting these issues is a team effort that requires everyone’s participation. Regardless of differences in culture, religion, or languages, citizens must live in harmony. Nigerians must reiterate at every opportunity that every great multi-ethnic and the multi-religious nation has battled to reap the immense dividends of diversity and pluralism through thick and thin. The fight for a more perfect federation is a lifetime endeavour that each generation must contribute to.
Poverty and economic growth must be addressed comprehensively to promote national unity and security. Nigerians should regard themselves first as citizens of Nigeria, putting aside ethnic emotions that are harmful to the country. It is important to remember that the majority of the world’s most famous inventions were discovered by accident. Therefore, Nigerians should view the country’s amalgamation as a tremendous force that will carve a space for itself to exist as a nation.
To achieve this aim, every Nigerian must unite as one indivisible nation and see the country as a whole to advocate the founding fathers’ hopes and aspirations, which would foster national unity in the country. Nigerians must remember that our strength resides in our unity.
