As a young man who was born with a broken silver spoon, I can remember in the 80s and 90s that we were mostly raised with rich cultural and religious practices. Our parents are down to earth and very objective. They wanted us to have both a religious and western education, and that was within their means. They gave us the best they could offer without compromising standards. No matter how bad things are, children were not raised with a lack of morals, nor were we raised to compromise the standards of honesty, good principles, and lasting values. In the past, the community managed every child to ensure that every child had basic morals, values, and education.

Fast-forwarding to the millennium’s children, they gave no dem to anything, they lost it to uncontrolled social activities. This new generation has more mannerless individuals than the previous generation. Parental values are lost and the street is the new school because the home school has failed, and by extension, the formal schools are falling too. The community at large has lost interest in me and my family system. Youths who are the principal actors of social vices are mostly youths who are hungry, homeless, hopeless, and helpless. These youths are from the categorised group of nobodies. With or without a little social support from the spoilt brats from privileged homes. These kids grow up to be veterans on our streets. Yet, these promiscuous youth parents are aware of the atrocities their wards are committing without the capacity to stop them, and some parents even assist them in this generation.

Even more so, parents in this generation don’t have any checks on their children, despite the advancement in technology and modern life. Families are more concerned about how the world sees them today than how their homes will be seen in the future. It is all too obvious that some parents advise their children on how to engage in immoral activities as long as they are immediately profitable. What will sadden the heart most is the gesture of governmental and non-governmental organizations towards the uprising in our society.

Nothing will change unless we are deliberate in disciplining perpetrators, accomplices, and backbones of social vice. Social activities in recent times have taken over our space and, without a check, have led to numerous social vices. It is sad to note that most parents ignore the consequences of their children’s excessive participation in social activities, which mostly leads to social vices.

We must all be ready to walk the talk now. Enough of talking the walk in a safe society. It’s our collective responsibility. We are all stakeholders in this society, and we must protect our space. Let’s speak up, act and be proactive. Every parent must be ready to speak up if their children are going out of control; otherwise, the wrath of the gods will consume not just the family but the whole community.
