Ralf Rangnick has informed his players that a pressing style is the only way to get Manchester United to the next level, and that they must be ready to produce exactly what he wants.

Rangnick arrived as United’s temporary manager with a reputation in Germany as the “godfather of gegenpressing,” but aside from the first half of his first game against Crystal Palace, there has been little indication of it.

As he prepared for his seventh games in charge, tonight’s FA Cup match against Aston Villa, the 63-year-old emphasized the importance of the players achieving his criteria.

‘This is the only way we’ll be able to compete at this level,’ Rangnick added.

‘Whenever you watch a game, even if it isn’t the one you want to watch ,they are not the best teams; they play with vigor, toughness, and energy, and they dash.

‘This is exactly what we need to do. This is the type of team we need to become.

‘As I said after the first game against Crystal Palace, we demonstrated a lot of those things, at least in the first half, and now it’s about putting it into practice.’ This is our responsibility.

‘We have to develop the players and find the individuals who are willing and capable of doing that and delivering exactly what we discussed for each game.’

‘At a club like Manchester United, there is a lot of pressure. I’m confident the guys are aware of this. The team has the ability to dominate and win games.’

Forty years ago, he spent a year studying in England and playing for non-league Southwick; his goodbye gift from teammates was a ticket to the 1980 FA Cup final between West Ham and Arsenal.

‘I’ve always been a tremendous fan, supporter, and lover of the FA Cup,’ he continued.

‘It’s a very crucial competition for me.’ We’ll make every effort to field our strongest team.’
