Oyo state governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has stated that his administration will distribute palliatives to victims of the fire in the Auto-spare parts Market (Iso Part) in Agodi, Gate area of Ibadan, Oyo state.
Makinde stated this while addressing market men and women and other relevant stakeholders at the market today.
Governor Makinde said he will be meeting with the leadership of the market to go about how the government will distribute the palliatives to the affected members of the inferno.
In his words: “I have seen the extent of destruction and I know how important this market is to the economy of Oyo State.”
“I was here during the electioneering. I interacted with you. I’m still trying to process in my head the way forward. I want to implore you, first, the government will come to your aid. You won’t be left alone to face this challenge.”
“I heard some people saying that the section that was not burnt should be razed so that everyone should be on the same level.”
“Let’s start to compile the list of those affected and the shops burnt. Tomorrow afternoon, we will sit with the market leaders and announce the way forward.”
“The government will have a meeting with the representatives of the market tomorrow afternoon to discuss the immediate palliatives that can be provided to the traders.”
Addressing how future occurrence of such fire incident will be evaded, Governor Makinde hinted about his intention to relocate the market to a more spacious place which will house the entire market structures and address the peculiarities of the auto-spare part market.
Makinde, however sought the opinion of traders in the market on how best this relocation will be achieved.
“The second thing is that all of you should go and deliberate whether the government should see this as a sign that it is time to move this market to a far more organized setting.”
“Is this the time to move this market to a more spacious place? It is a decision that we all have to sit down together and deliberate before we take because I don’t want a recurrence of this tragedy and the only way for us to ensure that we don’t witness like this again is for us to sit down and think of a solution that will endure.”
“In the next one or two weeks, we will take a decision on the market generally.
Even if the market will still be here, how do the traders arrange themselves such that this kind of thing won’t happen again.”
