The regime of President , Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .) has been called by the Global rights group , Amnesty International, for the immediate release of a Sahara Reporters ’ publisher , Omoyele Sowore and four other activists who were remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre on Monday .

On Tuesday, @AmnestyNigeria tweeted
“Nigerian must authorities to immediately and unconditionally release activist Omoyele Sowore and other activists who were arrested by the police during a New Year ’s Eve peaceful protest in Abuja .”

It was earlier reported that Sowore and the other activists were arrested on New Year ’ s Eve in Abuja for holding a protest against bad governance .

They were subsequently arraigned on three charges of criminal conspiracy , unlawful assembly, and attempting to incite others but the activists denied the charges .

Sowore , who was earlier declared a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International in 2019, was detained for several months by the Buhari regime for allegedly calling for a revolution .

He was denied bail several times and even re -arrested inside the Federal High Court .
He was however released after domestic and international pressure in December 2019.
