Bruno Fernandes has revealed that compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo regularly asks him about the latest developments at Manchester United 11 years on from leaving.
Fernandes followed in the footsteps of Ronaldo by joining United from Sporting Lisbon, and the former has admitted that he regularly speaks to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
And although Portuguese star Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid back in 2009 before moving onto Juventus, he clearly still has huge affection for the Old Trafford outfit.
When asked whether he sounded out Ronaldo ahead of his move to United, Fernandes – who has since taken the Premier League by storm following his £68million arrival – revealed to the club’s official website : ‘I spoke with him after, not before.
I said before Manchester, for me, was the dream team. I always wanted to play for this team and it doesn’t matter who can talk about it – bad or good, I will come. It was my dream to play in the Premier League,’ he added.
‘I have the choice to come to Manchester United and it was two dreams in one. It was perfect. Of course, I spoke with Cristiano after and he spoke very well about the club. I spoke with him some days ago, again.
‘Every time I speak with him, he asks me how Manchester is and if everything is okay.
Everyone knows he spent a lot of time in Manchester and he has consideration for the club. He likes the club, I think he won his first Ballon d’Or here, so it’s a club who’ve marked him, for sure.’
Ronaldo became a United legend after joining from Sporting Lisbon back in 2003, going onto score 118 times and producing 69 assists in 292 matches for the club.
While at Old Trafford, Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FIFA Club World Cup, one FA Cup and two League Cups.
Now it’s his compatriot’s time to leave his mark at United, and Fernandes has started off in some style.
The 25-year-old played a vital role in helping United secure a top-four finish while shining in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, scoring 12 goals and producing eight assists in just 22 matches.
