The World Boxing Council (WBC) has mandated Tyson Fury to fight Dilian Whyte before taking on Anthony Joshua.

Fury recently agreed a two-fight deal with Joshua which is expected to go down in 2021 but WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has ordered Fury and Whyte fight to take place before the anticipated Joshua bout.

Whyte recently dragged WBC to court for not being able to have a shot at the title despite being a mandatory challenger.

In 2019, the WBC promised Whyte a title bout in 2020 after beating Oscar Rivas to become the WBC interim champion. Whyte feels being ignored going by the buzz surrounding the Fury/Joshua bout.

WBC chairman Sulaiman has come out to clear the air while also playing down the possibility of Joshua/Fury happening soon.

“For the WBC there is a mandatory title defence that the champion has to make”, Sulaiman said.

The mandatory challenger is the interim champion, Dillian Whyte.

He [Whyte] has the right to enforce his title shot after the Wilder vs Fury third fight. Fury vs Joshua is just speculation.

They have both come out and said that they have a deal which is very good.

But there are many things that must take place before it actually
happens.”

Fury, 31, popular known as the Gypsy King is set for a trilogy with American boxer Deontay Wilder at later date and venue that is yet to be decided. Sulaiman is however sure it will certainly happen.

“Right now we don’t know when boxing is going to resume for some
specific fights such as the rematch between Deontay Wilder vs Tyson
Fury. We don’t know if that fight will happen October, November,
December, next year. We cannot control that. But for the WBC there is
a legal contract that they signed for a third fight.”

The Bronze Bomber as Wilder is being called lost to the Briton via a seventh round technical knockout (TKO) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Paradise, Nevada in New York, United States on February 22, 2020. It was his only loss in his boxing career in 44 bouts.

Joshua who has the IBF, WBO and IBO titles will also have to negotiate his International Boxing Federation (IBF) belt against Bulgaria’s Kubrat Pulev. Whyte, 32, who was also a former kickboxer has had 28 professional fights in his career, losing just once.

The only loss was against Anthony Joshua in 2015.
