Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has urged UEFA to move the second leg match between Barcelona and Napoli to either Germany or Portugal if conditions in Spain won’t guarantee safety due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Football might have resumed in Spain but then, the country is still very much affected by the Covid-19.
There have been more than 329,721 thousand confirmed cases in Spain making the country the seventh most affected country in the world.
The Catalonia region which is the North Eastern part of the
country has 76,332 confirmed cases and 5,682 deaths.
With these numbers in mind, reports already have it that the match
could be moved to a neutral ground.
UEFA have also asked the Catalan Department of Health to provide adequate health guarantees for the Barcelona versus Napoli match at Camp Nou which is expected to go down by August 8.
Napoli president, however, doesn’t see a reason to stay in a city that is not safe.
“The match against Barcelona will always be a great match. This summer we played two, then we had a third in the first leg of the last 16 in the Champions League. Now, we will play a fourth”, De Laurentiis
said.
“We hear doubts and fears coming from Spain. UEFA is indifferent, there is no one who knows how to run the shop.
“If they have decided that the Champions League is done in Portugal and the Europa League in Germany, I think we the return leg should be played in Portugal or Germany.
“I don’t understand why we must stay in a city that has major problems.”
The Champions League second leg will be played in the cities of the host between 7–8 August 2020 while the quarter-final till the end of this season competition will be played in Portugal as a mini-tournament.
