Matawalle cautions against engaging in protest-related violence.

By: Adisa Deborah

Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information at the Ministry of Defence, has denounced the planned nationwide protest led by anonymous individuals, which differs from earlier events where known organizers were present. This comes as security services warn of economic hardship in Nigeria.

The federal government is addressing the issue of so-called protesters, encouraging sponsors and organizers not to undermine its efforts to protect residents from violence. The minister underscores that Nigerian and international laws permit peaceful protest, assembly, and association, but do not condone violence or destruction.

He emphasizes that protests are constitutional rights and that using violence to demonstrate is a crime under international law.

“We must be vigilant and not allow those with malicious intentions to disrupt our peace and unity.”

Matawalle also stated that people attempting to mimic the scenario in Nigeria should reconsider, saying, “Those moving to unleash the Kenyan episode on Nigeria should look back and examine the consequences for Kenya.” That event should have no place in Nigeria because it will put us back rather than advancing.”

Matawalle emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding national peace and unity, urging Nigerians to reject any action that could lead to instability. He also confirmed the FG’s readiness to listen to and address citizens’ issues through constructive engagement and communication.
