Madagascar reports first COVID-19 death

Madagascar reported its first coronavirus related death, nearly two months after the index case was detected in the country, official statistics showed.

The Indian Ocean island which has reported 304 cases has made news when President Andry Rajoelina claimed a home-grown herbal concoction can cure coronavirus infected patients.

Several African countries have ordered or expressed interest in the proclaimed remedy, which is known as COVID-Organics.

The tonic drink is said to be derived from artemisia — a plant with proven efficacy in malaria treatment — and other indigenous herbs.

Yet, the World Health Organization has kicked
against “adopting a product that has not been taken through tests to see its efficacy”.
