FG and ASUU meet to avoid strike in varsities
By: Adisa Deborah
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government met to prevent industrial action. Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU President, expressed confidence that the negotiations would resolve unresolved issues. Education Minister Tahir Mamman, who had vowed to strike, confirmed the meeting. Both parties were invited to form committees to address the ten issues ASUU made.
The education minister announced a meeting with the government in two weeks to discuss issues concerning the university system. The gathering focused on forming committees to handle demands and determine the next steps. The minister promised consultations to fix the problems and guarantee the system functions properly. The conference was fruitful and beneficial, with everyone agreeing on the best route for young men and the nation.
Nigerian academics, backed by ASUU, have held their first formal meeting with the Federal Government to address issues. The union issued a three-week ultimatum for unmet demands, resulting in a nationwide walkout on February 14, 2022. The meeting’s goal is to establish timeframes and move on with resolving these challenges.
The Nigerian government’s unwillingness to implement the Memorandum of Action in December 2020 resulted in a 2022 strike throughout public colleges. Unresolved issues include the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU Agreement, the release of unpaid salaries, and the discharge of outstanding third-party deductions. The union regrets the outstanding concerns.
ASUU members demanded that the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System be replaced with the University Transparency and Accountability Solution. The federal government is implementing the system, but the union is demanding earned academic allowances, university expansion, and the unconstitutional dissolution of governing bodies. Protests are being held across the country to demand reform.
Despite warnings of industrial unrest on campuses, the federal government has released four months of delayed salaries to ASUU lecturers as a Greek gift. The union stated a desire for negotiations, but the administration declined.
